The summer has flown by once again, and now we find ourselves just hours away from the first competitive match of the season as Michael Duff begins his first full campaign in charge of Wycombe Wanderers with a home tie against Stevenage in the Carabao Cup.

It's been a strange summer off the pitch for the club, with the terrace debacle and a general lack of communication leading to frustration among some supporters.

Regardless of your views on the off-field issues, one thing all supporters can come together and share the excitement for is the big kick-off.

In terms of transfer business, it's been a really positive summer so far, with seven new additions to the squad, who will certainly help overcome some of last season's issues.

The goalkeeping department has been bolstered with the signing of Conor Hazard, who's looked exceptional in pre-season, whilst the additions of Steve Cook and Sam Parker have reinforced the backline with some extra quality and experience.

Silko Thomas could prove to be another shrewd addition from Leicester City, while Cauley Woodrow's permanent return, coupled with Emre Tezgel's loan arrival, adds much-needed firepower in attack.

It's fair to say the squad is in a much better place than it was back in May, and whilst the signings may not have been overly glamorous, they're most certainly sensible.

As Duff said in his press session on Thursday, some of the spending in League One has been ridiculous, and even though Wycombe aren't financially troubled, matching some of the division's biggest spenders simply isn't realistic or sustainable.

Instead, Wycombe have adopted a more familiar recruitment model, prioritising value and suitability over expensive gambles.

Whatever your views on the ownership group may be, they deserve credit for learning from previous mistakes. Their recruitment has been far more measured this summer.

The squad isn't the finished article just yet, with another couple of arrivals anticipated, but heading into the opening game with the foundations already in place is a refreshing change.

Duff wants to build a side that the fans are proud of, and the early signs in pre-season suggest the squad he's built over the summer will do just that, with a clear identity already emerging.

Adding players such as Cook and Woodrow will help combat the mentality issues faced last term, and with young, hungry players like Parker and Tezgel who are on an upward trajectory in the fold, there appears to be a healthy blend of experience and youthful ambition that could serve Wycombe well this season.

Wanderers have been somewhat written off by a lot of people in their pre-season predictions, which is understandable given the quality in League One, but being the underdog has always suited this club during its most successful periods, so let's hope that rings true again.

With a quality head coach and a squad full of talent and experience, it's shaping up to be an exciting season ahead.

There will be enthralling wins, devastating defeats, highs, lows and every emotion that comes with supporting a football club. Through it all, we'll stick with our team in the hope that this year is finally our year.
