Wycombe Wanderers defender seemingly set for National League move

The first full year of the academy's return was a huge success, with multiple players making their senior debuts, and Micah Olabiyi even registering a league goal on the final day of the season.

Now, after a year in the PDP squad, some of Wanderers' young players will be allowed to leave the club on loan this summer to get some experience of senior football.

The Chairboys have a plethora of exciting young talent on their books and will be keen to see some of those acclimatise to the senior game in the next 12 months, albeit at a lower level.

Even though it's still very early in the summer, it seems that the first PDP player to find a temporary home is defender Jack Matton.

The 20-year-old made his senior debut for Wycombe last season, finding the net in a 3-0 win over Gillingham in the EFL Trophy.

He then joined National League South outfit Tonbridge Angels on loan, where he made four appearances before returning to Adams Park to make his League One debut in the 3-2 victory over Rotherham United on the final day of the campaign.

After a strong 2025-26 season, Matton now looks set to make the step up to the National League, as Aldershot Town are seemingly set to sign the towering defender on a season-long loan deal.

The Shots announced on social media on Thursday evening that the youngster had joined the club on loan, only to delete the post minutes later.

It looks like Aldershot accidentally announced their new signing prematurely, as The Quartermen have been informed that this deal still looks set to happen.

This move will represent a great opportunity for Matton, playing under ex-Chairboy Scott Davies at a club which is full of optimism after beating the drop by just four points last season.

Matton won't be the first young Wycombe defender to spend time on loan with the Shots, as ex-Wanderer Luca Woodhouse made a temporary move to the EBB Stadium in 2025, when he was still with the Chairboys.
