Ex-Wycombe Wanderers manager sacked by Oxford United

The 42-year-old becomes the first managerial casualty ahead of the new League One season after the U's released a shock statement on Saturday morning.

The statement posted to the club's official website read: "Oxford United can confirm the departure of Matt Bloomfield as Men’s First Team Head Coach. 

"Matt was appointed in January 2026 and oversaw the second half of the 2025/26 season, a campaign which ultimately ended in relegation to League One.

"Throughout his tenure, he represented Oxford United with professionalism and integrity. 

"We would like to thank Matt for his efforts and wish him every success in the future. 

"The process of appointing a new men's first team head coach will begin immediately, and the club will provide updates in due course."

Chairboys legend Bloomfield replaced Gary Rowett in the dugout at the Kassam Stadium in January 2026 and went on to win six of his 22 games in charge.

It wasn't enough to keep Oxford in the Championship, however, meaning Bloomfield suffered a second successive relegation from the second tier.

Wanderers were set to renew acquaintances with their former manager when Oxford come to town, but that long-awaited reunion is now on ice following his departure from the U's.

There was no mention of whether fellow former Wycombe chief Mike Dodds will remain at the club, having served as Bloomfield's assistant at the Kassam Stadium, but recent reports have linked him with a switch to Championship side Blackburn Rovers.
